I was born and raised in the hills of Webster County, Kentucky. I’ve been practicing openly since 1991. My practice is a mixture of folklore, superstition, and wildcrafting from the forest. My stepmother has been called to blow out thrush from cancer patients and babies. My SIL was taught to pull out fire and pain from wounds. My dad has the gift of knowing when trouble is down the road. My gift came in the form of hexes, spellwork, and moving energy.
I grew up steeped in hardcore Southern Missionary Baptist faith – fire and brimstone, serpents were of the Devil, and the Bible was law. Yet, folklore and superstition were served at the supper table throughout my entire life. It was through these stories that I found my way to witchcraft.
I purchased my first book of witchcraft in 1990, Raymond Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft. While I loved the lore, the candle magic, and herbalism, ceremonial magic wasn’t for me. I’d spent my life creating magic in the woods and that primitive connection was too strong to ignore.
Over the past thirty years I have worked with dirt, wood, found bone, plants, and creeks to create my own practice and rituals. By watching plants work together in the woods, seeing which plants are companions on the hill, following deer trails, noticing the shape of the hanging vines in the trees, and watching mushrooms build family structures, I’ve built connections that allow me to bend energy one way or another.
I hope you stick around for the articles and photos I take on my adventures in working the woods.
