A jinx is a run of bad luck. It can be caused by another subconsciously or intentionally wishing ill will upon or directing anger
towards you. If you received a promotion that someone felt they deserved, or you caught the eye of another’s beloved, or maybe
you did something intentionally that hurt them, their anger and focused thoughts on you can cause a jinx.
We can also give ourselves a run of bad luck if we aren’t taking care of ourselves physically and mentally, or we are acting in ways
unbecoming (being ugly).
REMOVE A JINX
Lay a broom across the floor. Step backwards over it.
Throw salt over your left shoulder.
Drive a nail into your bedframe.
Wear a silver coin on red thread around your ankle.
Drive three nails into your doorframe. One on each side on the bottom and one in the top center.
Walk across a running stream or crick.
Dig a hole in the yard and pour in your urine. Take an axe and cut through it.
Carry a piece of coal or a silver coin in your right shoe or pocket.
After we break the connection with the jinx, THEN we should do a cleansing. Sometimes I’ll run a cleansing bath by dissolving a square of Reckitts Crown Blue or Mrs. Stewarts Bluing into a quart of hot water then mixing it into my bath. I avoid the eyes and mouth and gently wipe around them with a rag. If in the shower, you can also pour the quart of water over your arms, legs, and torso.
I’ll generally make a charm bag to carry for a time being until I feel the bad luck has expired. This might be a poke (sachet) of red flannel with cornmeal, tobacco, and a true piece of silver, or with salt, a piece of die (dice), and some crumbled Reckitts Crown Blue.
The most important thing to remember is you need to detach from the jinx setter and that energy BEFORE cleansing. Otherwise you’ve just made a clean spot for it to fill back up, sometimes with gained momentum. Think of it as you are a quart jar and the jinx is a spigoted sun tea jar. If the jinx fills up your quart jar and you empty it (cleanse it), then set it back under the spigot, you’ve just left more room for the jinx to fill it up. You need to remove your jar out from under the spigot, then cleanse it and stay away from that spigot.
If you are the cause of the jinx, be it your behavior or attitude, you should attempt to make some amends, even if just acknowleding to the person that you were being ugly. Folk magic works alongside daily life and experiences. We still need to address our part in relationship issues, accept accountability when it’s due, and work our best to live decently.
THE ESSENCE OF FOLK MAGIC IS FINDING BALANCE.
If things are going well for you, make sure you are working for balance in all parts of your life. Mind your attitude, your physical being, your relationships. If you have a good roof over your head, money in the bank to buy food and pay the bills, car is working, and kids are healthy, there’s no need to do a working to win the lottery because things are going your way. When you start to get greedy, that’s when your luck can quickly change.
If things are going poorly for you and you think a jinx is at play, do the jinx breaker, cleanse, then witness your life. What have you been doing that might have caused an upset? Have you been taking care of yourself? Have you treated those around you kindly? Have you minded your own dang business? If you don’t feel like you could be at fault for your change of luck, then begin to look around, watch people’s ways around you, listen and observe. Chances are, you’ll see it pop up shortly. Once you know the cause, it’s much easier to address the problem.
